How the Inca Quipu Became the World’s First Data Compression System
The Inca quipu, a network of knotted cords, wasn’t just an ancient accounting tool—it pioneered data compression centuries before modern computers. By encoding numbers, hierarchies, and even narratives in compact knot patterns, the quipu mirrors today’s compression algorithms, offering a glimpse into early information theory.
